What's Plywood?

Plywood is actually a kind of board made by bonding with adhesive. The front side of plywood is called "panel", and its back side is called "backboard". The middle one is called "core board". Usually, the core of the board is made of some wood cut into thin slices, and then these slices are pasted layer by layer in the direction of the wood grain with adhesive. After that, the panel and inner layer are symmetrically placed on both sides of the core or in the center layer, and then the veneer coated with glue is stacked in an alternating manner in the direction of the wood grain to form a board embryo, and then heated and pressed. Common plywood types include three-ply board, five-ply board, etc. Common plywood materials include poplar, willow, beech, etc.

What are the advantages of plywood?

1. Strength

Plywood is made up of thin sheets glued together, and these thin sheets also form a right-angle structure. As we all know, the right-angle structure will have better strength and will not crack or bend easily.

2. Price

Plywood is made up of thin sheets glued together, so the price will be a little lower than other boards.

3. Wide range of uses

Plywood is not only used in home decoration, but also in airplanes, ships and containers.

What are the disadvantages of plywood?

1. Smoothness

The surface of plywood is not as smooth as density board and solid wood board, so it is often not used as the facade of the window.

2. Not moisture-proof

Plywood is made of multiple layers of thin boards, so if the plywood layers are not well bonded, it is easy to become damp.

3. Contains formaldehyde

As we mentioned above, plywood is made of adhesives, so it contains formaldehyde.

How to choose plywood?

1. Appearance

The wood grain of good quality plywood is relatively clear, and it feels smooth and flat, without cracking or bulging. Of course, some plywood will have cracks, frizziness and other phenomena. These plywoods are of poor quality. Keep your eyes open!

2. Sound

The strength of plywood also determines the quality of plywood. The method to check the strength is very simple, that is, pick up one end of the plywood and listen to whether there is a "creaking" sound. If there is, it means that the strength is not high.

3. Moisture content

The moisture content of the board is very important. If the moisture content is too high, the board is prone to cracking and deformation. The method of checking is that if you feel cold when you touch the plywood, then the moisture content is relatively high.

 4. Board core

The board core is an important factor that determines the quality of plywood. Although we cannot identify it with the naked eye in the middle of the board, we can knock it with our hands. If the sound is uneven, it means that there is a hollow phenomenon in the board core. Whether the joints of the plywood are tight is also very important, and there should be no unevenness.
