What are the differences between particleboard and MDF?
Share
The difference between particleboard and MDF board is that the raw materials of particleboard are not completely crushed into fibers, but crushed into particles, which are generally called shavings, and then glue is added and pressed together; while MDF board is made by completely crushing the wood raw materials into fibers and then adding glue and pressing them together.
In real life, particleboard and MDF board are often easily confused because they are both made of wood and fiber wood as the main raw materials. So what are the differences between MDF board and particleboard? Which one is more environmentally friendly?
The main differences are as follows:
1. Different manufacturing processes
Particleboard is a man-made board made by gluing wood or other wood and fiber materials under pressure and heat; MDF board is made by crushing and pressing wood and fiber materials in water and then using adhesive.
2. Different appearance
The cross section of particleboard is three layers, the outer two layers are fine particles, and the middle layer has larger particles; MDF board is also called fiberboard, and its cross section has the same color and particle size distribution.
3. Different characteristics
Particleboard has better moisture resistance, water absorption expansion rate, and nail holding power; MDF board has poor moisture resistance, but better shaping ability. The base material of PVC adsorption door panels is mostly density board.
4. Different processing techniques
Since the raw materials of MDF boards are close to powder, the surface area of the same volume of material is much larger than the lamellar sawdust used in particleboards. The adhesive consumed in the bonding and molding of the boards is also much more than that of particleboards, which determines that the price, density (specific gravity), and formaldehyde content of MDF boards are all higher than those of particleboards. Therefore, it can be seen that the high price of MDF boards is due to high costs rather than high performance.
5. Different scope of application
Due to the internal multi-layer structure, the surface of the MDF board is equivalent to that of the MDF board and has a good density; the inside is a layered wood chip with a fiber structure, which is maintained by a specific process and is close to the structure of natural solid wood board.

Which is more environmentally friendly, particleboard or density board?
The density of particleboard is close to that of MDF, but since particleboard is made of particleboard material with adhesive pressed together, its density is uneven, low in the middle and high at both ends, so its nail holding force is lower than that of MDF. In addition, the surface of MDF is more delicate and has higher flatness than particleboard. However, particleboard is better at absorbing moisture and preventing moisture than MDF, and its price is relatively low. Therefore, it can be said that qualified MDF and particleboard only have their own strengths in function, and there is no saying that one is more environmentally friendly.
